When you’re able to write an article where you can put a new Missy Elliot song alongside a song by a 20 year-old internet sensation you know you’re living in an exciting time. Drake and Future said it best – what a time to be alive.
Unfortunately Troye Sivan had to cancel his first Australian headline gigs yesterday but it didn’t stop the budding popstar from dropping a new track off his forthcoming debut album Blue Neighbourhood. Youth is the song and it’s an anthem about running away and finding something more stimulating. Aesthetically it’s very much like a lot of the stuff we heard on Sivan’s Wild EP but this one has a cranking chorus built upon layered vocals and a chopped and screwed drop. Blue Neighbourhood is out 4th December.
Eves The Behavior
This is Eves The Behavior as you’ve never heard her before. We’re used to hearing moody, after-dark tracks from the young Aussie artist but Girl adds an edgier side to her using icy synths and rattling percussion. “Girls like us need something bigger,” she sings on the track which she says is about, “getting pissed off at being treated like one.” She sounds pissed off which is a surprisingly enticing side to her.

WTF (Where They From) (Feat. Pharrell)
You read it right, Missy is back and in fine form. WTF (Where They From) is the first taste of new Missy since she annihilated the Super Bowl with Katy Perry earlier this year. It features her longtime bud Pharrell and sees her getting back to basics with a song that is pure rap from start to finish. She may be 44 but she’s still got it rocking everything from the tracksuits to the comically big eye wear.
Sofi De La Torre
19 In Mexico
In case you haven’t heard we’re bloody obsessed with Spanish popstar in waiting Sofi De La Torre. 19 In Mexico follows on from Mess and LONDON x PARIS, following in a very similar vein. It’s a beautiful track but it’s also got this R&b-edge to it delivered flawlessly by De La Torre’s effortless cool. She’s got all the elements there to be something very big in 2016 and if she keeps delivering tracks like this it’ll be a sure thing.

Men Of Glass (Feat. Rome Fortune)
We’re getting FKA twigs vibes from Dutch artist SEVDALIZA not so much because they sound exactly alike but more because they both have a knack for finding melody in the most experimental of soundscapes. Men Of Glass is a huge sounding track with luscious strings, looming percussion and operatic vocals all contributing to something special. Rome Fortune’s comes completely out of nowhere but it’s enthralling as is SEVDALIZA’s return following.

Am I Wrong? (Feat. Schoolboy Q)
Anderson .Paak has spent a lot of time as a featured artist for everyone from Dr. Dre to TOKiMONSTA but now really feels like his time. He delivered a one-two hit this week with The Season/Carry Me almost immediately followed by Am I Wrong? The latter is the more immediate of the two with a perky beat produced by Pomo. It’s really interesting to see someone so rooted in soul and funk team up with an electronic producer and it really works. It’s super smooth while being part-synthetic and part-human.

It’s All In Vain
Wet‘s previous two tracks Deadwater and Weak allowed them to break our hearts and on new track It’s All In Vein they’re doing at again. It’s because lead singer Kelly Zutrau has a certain fragility to her voice that just hits straight at the heart. This track sees her get a little tougher though singing, “let go of me,” as she’s attempting to leave the relationship. She sounds completely in control showing another dimension to the heartbreak. It’s from their debut album Don’t You out 29th January 2016.

If you’re having a relatively good day and don’t fancy holding back tears then best you leave Daughter‘s Numbers for another day. The second track taken from their forthcoming record Not To Disappear is another devastating cut with frontwoman Elena Tonra singing “I feel numb in this kingdom.” That’s immediately followed by rollicking, stirring drums that drive the song through to its epic finish. It’s a stunning track but my goodness does it tug at the heartstrings.
Nina Las Vegas
Label boss Nina Las Vegas is currently dropping free tunes for her NLV Records roster and this one comes from the boss herself. Contagious is the first track from her this year without fellow Aussie producer Swick and instead sees her team up with another Mad Decent-affiliated producer Snappy Jit. It’s a track bursting with energy from the vocal sample to the dancehall-inspired beat. Again it sounds nothing like anything coming out of this country right now which seems to be the general aim of NLV Records.

Out Of Time
Aussie R&B singer Vanessa Elisha just keeps going from strength to strength and this latest track Out Of Time is proof of that. She’s worked on the cut with US producer XXYYXX and together they’ve produced an after-dark sizzler reminiscent of Tinashe’s Aquarius record. Her voice effortlessly slides through the equally smooth beats sounding confident and sensual at the same time. Elisha has the goods to make it big here in Aus and abroad.
