There’s just under two weeks until Christmas which means if you’re going to order online you’re going to have to do it now-ish or sooner. These are gift ideas for the friend or family member who mimicked the Drake Hotline Bling dance on the day of release, became a bedroom producer or joined the vinyl revolution this year.
Carrie Brownstein’s Hunger Makes Me A Modern Girl
It looked like Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon had already won music autobiography of the year for her brilliant book Girl In A Band but Sleater-Kinney’s Carrie Brownstein came through at the last minute. It’s an honest, funny and brutal recount of her time in the band and dealing with the music industry as a woman. There’s not much of that Portlandia-style sarcasm here but it’s a thrilling read nonetheless.
Korg microKey Air
If you’re looking to become a bedroom producer this Christmas season look no further than the Korg microKey Air. The mini MIDI synth is literally wireless and means you can hook it up to your iPad while sitting poolside and write a hit on Garageband. It may require a little bit more finesse and skill than that but at least you’ll be trying. Alison Wonderland didn’t get where she is sitting by a pool sipping cocktails.*
* You may need more than just the Korg microKey Air to emulate AW’s success.
Jamie xx Record Slip Mat
A record player was such a circa 2014 Christmas present. That means everybody should already have one and because most people will just have it sitting in the corner of their living room, you’ll want to jazz it up a bit. Look no further than Jamie xx’s colourful record slip mat. It’s basically his album cover in circle form but his cover would look good printed on a poo, so naturally it looks great.
Drake Hotline Bling Christmas Sweater
The Hotline Bling memes lit up the internet this year and have now made their way onto physical merch. Some mad genius has turned one of the video’s key scenes into an ugly Christmas sweater so you can impress your Great Aunt and still be satisfied knowing that she appreciates something that has Drake on it. Win, win.
FKA twigs Candle
FKA twigs may have some of the sexiest videos of all time so if you’re looking to spice up your sex life this silly season an FKA twigs candle is essential. With “When I trust you we can do it with the lights on,” emblazoned on the side, it literally facilitates her lyrics IRL. Also, nearly everything from her merch store which went on sale over the weekend is already sold out so you’re going to have to settle for the candle, aren’t you.
Basenji Trackpad Towel
The main dog Basenji is leading the merch pack this year. His basenji-inspired design has been printed on some of the best merch this year but we have to give it up for the towel. If your friend/family member is playing tennis, professionally diving or just looking for a way to wipe the sweat away during the summer festival season, you can’t look past the Basenji Trackpad towel.
A Beyoncé Pin
These Georgia Perry pins are infamous all around the world now. There are Jay, Kanye and Kim K pins but given that Beyoncé has been a bit M.I.A this year, you might want to remind your gift recipient that she still exists and is still very close to their heart. What better way to do that than to stick her right on their heart.
Travi$ Scott Action Figure
This is one of the greatest things in rap merch history so the best thing to do would be to gift this to someone who has absolutely no idea who Travi$ Scott is and then wait for it to make its way back to you. That, or give it to your little niece and take great satisfaction in knowing that a three year-old is playing with a Travi$ Scott doll.
Ta-Ku x I Love Ugly Jacket
You are a bigger man than I if you’re generous enough to give this away instead of keeping it for yourself. Perth beatsmith Ta-Ku has teamed up with Kiwi fashion label I Love Ugly to deliver this beautiful piece of merch for his EP Songs To Make Up To. You’re not going to be able to do much with it this summer but just wait til winter comes around and you tuck your hand snuggly into those pockets.
Tkay Maidza socksRapper Tkay Maidza definitely has some of the coolest local merch around right now. It seems every club you go to you see someone wearing a Tkay shirt so maybe you should assume your gift-receiver already owns the shirt and go for the spooky socks instead. Then you can really stomp your feet like a brontosaurus in comfort.
Kendrick Lamar Print by Society6
Society6 are an art collective making some seriously cool shit. They call this series of prints Vintage Pop Culture and it features Snoop Dogg, Outkast, Kanye and more looking straight outta a vintage poster. This particular one is Kendrick Lamar’s Swimming Pools in vintage poster form and quite frankly it’s one of the most brilliant things we’ve seen all year.
Kanye West Socks
Must we say anything more about these? Just look at them. Make sure the person you’re giving a gift to has Kanye looking at every step they take.
Friends In Paris Children’s Book
“Really I’m the plug, really I’m the plug.”
Yes, we admit this is a shameless plug, but a necessary one nonetheless. Nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters – this is one for everybody whether you are learning to read or learning to rap. It’s the heartfelt story of Jay Z and Kanye learning the ins and outs of Paris together and meeting a few friends along the way. It’s billed as a children’s book but it’s likely to bring the North West out in all of us.
