Our bi-weekly investigation of what’s lit and what’s shit…
Given that people’s biggest argument against Adele is that she’s boring, it’s interesting that nearly every show she’s performed recently has drawn-up a headline. First she helped an engagement, then she twerked, then she said mothers should be allowed to do whatever they like when it comes to breastfeeding and then she shouted out UK grime rapper Stormzy on stage and he lost his shit. The best moment yet though has to be thousands of people singing to All I Ask when the power unexpectedly went out. It’s a mighty singalong that only Adele could’ve conducted.
Rihanna‘s literally not putting a foot wrong right now. Her video for Kiss It Better is an artistic masterpiece thanks to director Craig McDean’s dadaist vision and it’s only made the song even better. She also accepted a Rock Star Award at this year’s Black Girls Rock and have a poignant speech explaining her place as a role model. “You know role model is not the title they like to give me,” she said. “But that’s why tonight is so important to me because I think I can inspire a lot of young women to be themselves and that is half the battle”.
Not only is Kaytranada about to drop what is sure to be one of the year’s best releases, he’s also taken the massive step of coming out publicly. In a poignant and honest interview with The Fader, he revealed his struggle with depression and his path to discovering that he was gay. Ive been sad my whole life, but fuck that,” he said. “I know I have good things ahead. I dont know honestly if Im fully, 100 percent happy, but Im starting to get there. It’s not the duty of anyone in the public eye to reveal or talk about their sexuality but for those that look up to figures like Kaytranada and are going through the same, it can only be helpful and liberating. It’s an incredibly brave move and big ups to him for it. While we’re talking about him, we’re just going to go right ahead and rename 99.9%, 100% because there’s no way it’ll be any less.
Beyoncé has always been a fearless performer and artist but when it comes to speaking about social issues she’s often been either reserved or subtle. With the release of Formation it feels like we’ve seen a shift. She’s using her voice powerfully to fight for things close to her heart and this album could be her most political yet. She gave a rare interview with Elle and just gave quote upon quote of gold. Here are a few of our favourites:
– Im not really sure people know or understand what a feminist is but its very simple. Its someone who believes in equal rights for men and women.
– “If you are a man who believes your daughter should have the same opportunities and rights as your son, then you’re a feminist. Ask anyone, man or woman, Do you want your daughter to have 75 cents when she deserves $1?”
– On Formation: Anyone who perceives my message as anti-police is completely mistaken. I have so much admiration and respect for officers and the families of officers who sacrifice themselves to keep us safe. But lets be clear: I am against police brutality and injustice. Those are two separate things.”
Grime’s next big thing Novelist is in the country right now touring and by all reports it’s off the hook. He’s one of the most talented rapper and producers around right now and by the looks of it, he’s also an A+ performer. He’s playing in Sydney this Saturday night and if you want to miss out then that’s your prerogative but it may be the worst mistake of your life.
Taylor Swift Vs. Treadmill
Yeah, it’s quite funny but GAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH why did she do this? It’s so cringeworthy it makes you just want to crawl inside yourself and hide in your own ribcage.
Jay Z’s Two Lines On Drake’s Pop Style
So Drake got The Throne back together for his latest drop Pop Style but HOV got a little bit ripped off in terms of air time. It’s no secret that Jay has dropped the ball a bit in recent years and he’s been a little quiet for a while. Why he would choose to return with two measly lines that are book-ended by Kanye and Drake verses is beyond us. Either he phoned them in or he delivered a full verse and Drake got happy with the delete button.

No Aussies On The Glastonbury Lineup
Courtney Barnett, Flume, DMA’s, RÜFÜS and many more Aussies are all doing the festival rounds this year but it seems that Glastonbury isn’t feeling us this time around. While the lineup is quite good, they’re repping for the homeland this year delivering three British headliners. Unfortunately, there isn’t one Aussie on the lineup for the iconic festival, although that might change as there are more acts still to be added.

What is going on in Sydney right now? We have a law put in place by the NSW Government that prevents people from entering licensed venues after 1.30am and stops them from being able to order a drink after 3am but now the City Of Sydney wants to scrap alcohol-free public areas in many of the areas where the lockout laws are enforced. So that means that you can stop drinking at the club at 3am and then go and knock back wines in the streets.
