Dappled Cities have been around for more than a decade now and they’re eyeing the release of their fifth album but they continue to push through with one of the most innovative, alternative sounds in Australia. Their new single That Sound is an energetic, groovy track taking their indie-rock roots and glossing it up with pop-leaning keys and a quirky vocal.

Given the amalgamation of genres, we got them to put together a playlist for us of what they’re listening to right now to get into their head. They came back with an expectedly eclectic bunch of songs ranging from Prince and Beyoncé to Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.

Listen below and also read why they chose each song.

Prince – When Does Cry
Obviously the world will never ever recover from Prince dying. This is one of my favourite Prince songs. It’s so effortless, brilliant and perfect. Much like the man himself.

Ghostface Killah (with BadBadNotGood) – Ray Gun (featuring DOOM)
Ghostface Killah is the man, BadBadNotGood are amazing and DOOM is god. So this song can’t really go wrong. This whole album is amazing. Tim and I were talking about BadBadNotGood on Tuesday, and how effortless they are. Team them up with Ghostface, and DOOM, and it’s three entities that are all out of this world.

Peter Bibby – Hates my Boozin’
Don’t know much about Peter. He’s from Perth though. This song is so great. Kind of sad, and funny.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra – Multi-love
This band are really a thing. We played with the Mint Chicks years ago. Who knew that he’d become this? Not me. This song has it all – production, lyrics, music, subtlety.

Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young – Helpless
This song is perfection. I saw Neil Young do this live with Graham Nash on vocals and I died a bit.

Beyonce – Formation
Beyonce. “Bitch, I’m back”, the intro says. Not that she ever went anywhere. “My daddy Alabama, Momma Louisiana, You mix that negro with that Creole make a Texas bama”. So good. What a recipe. Also this one: “When he fuck me good I take his ass to Red Lobster, cause I slay”. Lucky Jay Z.

Kanye West – No More Parties in LA
This song is kind of terrible, but I love it. But I love Kanye so much – he can’t do no wrong in my eyes.

Converge – Axe to Fall
I like hardcore. I find metal hard, some of it I love and some of it I hate. I like people who use music to assault you, and Converge know how to do it. Really perks you up when you’re having a shit day.

The Replacements – Can’t Hardly Wait
A song about being in a band. I especially like this bit. “Jesus rides beside me, He never buys any smokes, Hurry up, hurry up, ain’t you had enough of this stuff? Ashtray floors, dirty clothes, and filthy jokes”. It really resonates with me after all these years, reminding me of the old days when you just kept playing shows. But back then you never thought you’d do anything different when you’re older. But then, life, ya know.

Swimwear – Hold On
Love Tim’s solo stuff. Really reminds me of him. Not enough fedora in this song though.
