LANKS is one of a handful of Aussie artists who have gone from strength to strength this year. His latest EP Viet Rose showed a songwriter who was willing to push the boundaries while maintaining a sweet, melodic accessibility.

With tracks like Holla and Bitter Leaf, he’s rightfully become a triple j staple and is slowly making a big name for himself on the Aussie live scene. He supported Vera Blue on her national tour this year, played his own impressive headline shows and will next year support RÜFÜS on some huge regional shows.

In LANKS’ sights right now though is his upcoming co-headline tour with Hein Cooper which will kick off at the beginning of December.

Before he sets out on that we grabbed him to put together a list of his favourite tunes right now for us because we know he’s got an A+ music taste. And he’s delivered with a stellar ‘in’ playlist. Sampha, Mura Masa, Solange incoming…

Check out the playlist below and his reasons for choosing each song.

Jack Grace – All Lost
I toured with Jack for the Ngaiire tour earlier this year and was completely blown away by his amazing musicality and sonic maturity. Did amazing work with Ngaiire on her album too.

Mura Masa – Love$ick
One of my favourite producers around, I had to include this one. He is great.

Mansionair – Easier
They never stop making these dreamy but quite melancholy songs that hit hard in the feels.

Cub Sport – I Can’t Save You
I kept hearing this song on the radio at work and amidst a whole afternoon of songs it was always sticking in my head. Cubbies are beautiful people who make beautiful music.

Vera Blue – Settle
To be honest, the Vera Blue song I have actually been listening to the most is an iPhone bootleg that I made while touring with her from an unreleased song. But since I can’t share that, this is another great song that hits hard. Every time it hits that ‘standing on this wire…’ line, phwoar!

Remi – Substance Therapy
My fav rapper in Aus. Rhymes and flow are next level. Another one who is set to continue his massive rise.

Saatsuma – Floating
Another rising talent who I had the pleasure of playing with for some of the dates of the Vera Blue tour. Great songwriters who are gonna be getting bigger and bigger I feel.

Braille Face – Backwards/Medicated
Not only has Braille Face put out one of the best records this year, he also – just for good measure – put out another 12 LPs across a few weeks in October. Sets the bar high and is only getting higher.

Sampha – Blood On Me
Sampha’s voice is so unique and interesting. All his melodies jump to life right out of the speakers and have a beautiful depth to them.

Solange – Don’t Touch My Hair

My favourite song off this great record. And again, it features Sampha and is a great song.

D.D. Dumbo – Walrus
The new album is so great. It’s funny hearing the triple J ad with a snippet talking about the influences of the record, cause I remember hearing some of Lionel Loueke’s guitar playing and the octave pedal and pentatonic guitar parts jumped out at me straight away as similar to D.D. Dumbo’s signature. A very fresh take that Australia hasn’t seen much of yet and it’s exciting to hear him develop.

Bon Iver – 22 (OVER S∞∞N)
Aside from the already stellar songwriting, it’s really cool hearing Justin Vernon clearly defining some new sounds in his production and showing what he’s been experimenting with. Very inspiring and thought provoking record for me, where I could hear a lot of similar things I had been experimenting with.
