The first day of summer requires some serious heat.
9. PRETTYMUCH – No More (Feat. French Montana)
The latest boyband PRETTYMUCH are starting to gain momentum but this is the first song that feels like it could be a big hit for them. It’s a slick slice of pop/R&B that recruits pop’s rapper of the moment French Montana.
8. Midas.Gold – Poppin’
Celebratory hip-hop just could a new local champion in Midas.Gold. The Brisbane rapper channels DRAM and Chance The Rapper on this organic, optimistic track that solidifies his place as the most exciting local MC coming up right now.
7. Jessie Reyez – Cotton Candy
Canadian singer Jessie Reyez has had a brilliant year, releasing an EP and contributing gold to Calvin Harris’ album but she’s not done churning out the goods. Cotton Candy takes us back to a very raw, no frills Reyez – the type we fell in love with on Figures.
6. SiR – Something Foreign (Feat. Schoolboy Q)
One of TDE’s latest signings SiR has teamed up with another TDE artist for Schoolboy Q for this expert slow-burner. It’s a jazz-infused, soulful tune that doesn’t try too much and still manages to have a power over you. SiR is going to do great things.
5. Alex Mali – Hoity Toity (Feat. Melo-X)
We’re feeling the heat today and Alex Mali is soundtracking it beautifully. The Brooklyn artist slows it down on Hoity Toity, taking her time to weave around that cloudy, sun-drenched beat. It also features an appearance from Melo-X who contributed to Beyoncé’s Lemonade.
4. Okenyo – WW 2.0 (Feat. Miss Blanks & Jesswar)
Okenyo has given one of our favourite local track of the year Woman’s World a refresh with two fellow local MCs who are really killing it right now. It adds even more power to track that already bled it.
3. N.E.R.D. – 1000 (Feat. Future)
N.E.R.D. have dropped the next track off their forthcoming album No_One Ever Really Dies, teaming up with Future for 1000. 1000 is a frantic, urgent track that speeds up even more from previous track Lemon before the beat slows down for Future to come through. It’s another really exciting cut that proves once again that N.E.R.D. have recovered from their lacklustre last album Nothing.
2. DJDS – Love (Feat. Empress Of)
Lana Del Rey‘s Love is a triumph, one of the best songs of the year, but it’s hardly a dancefloor stormer. That’s all about to change though because DJDS and Empress Of have covered it taking it straight to the dancefloor and turning up the temperature dial while they’re at it.
1. Miguel – Caramelo Duro (Feat. Kali Uchis)
Miguel‘s fourth album War & Leisure is out today and while there are plenty of highlights we can’t get past this Kali Uchi collab. It pairs together Latin stylings with Miguel’s trademark gritty R&B for something that sounds distinctly 2017.
