11 Songs You Need To Hear This Week: Carly Rae Jepsen, Vince Staples, Marina & The Diamonds And More

Written By Sam Murphy on 11/02/2018

A curated party for one.

11. Little Mix – Joan Of Arc

Little Mix are on an ’00s girl group vibe right now and we’re here for it. Joan Of Arc is taking us back to Danity Kane’s heyday. It’s cocky and sparse, edging further towards RnB than pop which is a first for Little Mix.

10. Clean Bandit – Baby (Feat. Marina & The Diamonds & Luis Fonsi)

Nearly every mainstream artist is cashing in on Latin music’s popularity right now but Baby may be one of our favourite takes. It feels like a warmer summer’s night and Marina is the perfect host.

9. King IV – Basic

King IV is one of the most ambitious upcoming pop artists in the country right now. Basic is her most innovative statement yet pairing sharp, spoken verses with a deliciously melodic hooks. We’re getting Chari XCX I Got It vibes.

8. Theophilus London – Only You (Feat. Tame Impala)

Theophilus London may have slightly snatched from Frank Ocean who covered this Steve Montell classsic last year but we’ll ignore it because it’s so goddamn good. The production on this could not be more perfect – groovy and psychedelic.

7. Collarbones – A.I.

Collarbones were always ahead of their time. Maybe now that all eyes are on experimental pop, they will truly get their moment. A.I. is a detouring, innovative piece of pop that carves out unexpected melodies in the roughest of places.

6. Miss Blanks – This Bitch

This Bitch‘s sunny instrumental may trick you into thinking Miss Blanks is letting you breathe for a moment but her bars suggest otherwise. A cheeky, diss track best consumed sunsoaked with drink in hand.

5. King Princess – Pussy Is God

When an artist can make a statement this strong less than a year after your first release, you know they’re bound for greatness. Pussy Is God shines with confident, expressive songwriting and just the right amount of experimental production.

4. Vince Staples – FUN!

Vince Staples dropped a whole new project FM! that nods to the Cali sound of where he’s from rather than the electronic stylings of his last record. FUN! does what it says on the tin. It’s a bubbling, minimal cut that’s run by Staples’ charisma.

3. Rosalia – DI MI NOMBRE (Cap.8: Extasis)

Spain’s Rosalia is the best new name in pop right now. DI MI NOMBRE (Cap.8: Extasis) takes flamenco music into the modern pop world and the result is mesmerising.

2. Carly Rae Jepsen – Party For One

You can count on Carly Rae Jepsen for a pure pop anthem that hits the spot. Party For One doesn’t switch up the formula but it doesn’t really need to. It’s perfect.

1. 1010 Benja SL – Ultimaybe

Young Turks signing 1010 Benja SL has a sneaker hit on his hands with this funky yet experimental sizzler. His voice sounds so good on his most upbeat song to date, like it’s been plucked from another era.
