11 Songs You Need To Hear This Week: Normani, Tyler, The Creator, Little Mix And More

Written By Sam Murphy on 11/16/2018

A little bit of this, a lot of that.

11. Liv Dawson – I Like You

Liv Dawson continues to expand on her sound, taking left turns with every new release. I Like You is the most explicitly pop song she’s ever made and it’s so delectable.

10. Girl Crush – Radio Silence

Girl Crush continue to put us in a daydream with their cloudy pop sound. Radio Silence is their latest and it cruises along in a daze of washed-out melody and ethereal vocals.

9. Burna Boy – On The Low

Nigerian artist Burna Boy had one of the best mixtapes of the year and now he’s back with another dancehall-tinged bop. On The Low is effortless from start to finish, tailor-made to inject a groove into any dancefloor.

8. Ari Lennox – Shea Butter Baby (Feat. J.Cole)

Ari Lennox has dropped five tracks this week but this one off the Creed II soundtrack is our favourite. Ari sizzles through her verses and it’s great to hear J.Cole leaning more towards RnB on this one.

7. Maribelle – Down For You

Maribelle is the queen of throwback pop right now and Down For You is serving heavy ’90s RnB vibes. Her voice sounds better than it ever has and she’s right where she needs to be on this jam.

6. Anderson .Paak – Headlow (Feat. Norelle)

.Paak’s new album Oxnard dropped today and while the whole thing is an instant classic we’re taken by Headlow. It’s a classy, funky cut that encapsulates everything that makes .Paak great – it bleeds with emotion, sizzles with funk and drips with swagger.

5. Little Mix – American Boy

American Boy is the best song called American Boy since Estelle. It’s taken from Little Mix’s new album which is very centred at a US audience but this is a slick, undeniable bop.

4. Tyler, The Creator – Lights On (Feat. Santigold & Ryan Beatty)

Tyler, The Creator, Santigold and Ryan Beatty making Christmas music is not what we thought we wanted but it’s definitely what we needed. It’s a playful, toybox of a song that expands on Tyler’s Flower Boy production.

3. Normani – Waves (Feat. 6lack)

Normani, our future pop queen, continues to make the right moves this time teaming with 6lack for a flawless slow-burner. Few artists could make a song this elongated so intoxicating but her vocals burn through the entire track.

2. Banoffee – Bubble

Bubble is her second song of the year and it’s one of the most deliciously experimental pop songs of the year. It’s both beautifully textured and heavily melodic with her songwriting the most confident it has ever sounded.

1. Mariah Carey – Giving Me Life (Feat. Blood Orange & Slick Rick)

Blood Orange should’ve produced Mariah Carey’s entire new album because Giving Me Life is, well, giving us life. It’s a faultless, mid-tempo that draws on the throwback RnB vibes that Mariah traded in back in the day. Slick Rick’s return on this song is so perfect too.
