Pop music is so bloody great right now.
12. Bebe Rexha – Not 20 Anymore
Bebe Rexha has really come into her own recently. She’s unafraid to call out your bullshit and that’s exactly what’s happening on Not 20 Anymore – a sonic extension of a post she made on social media recently.
11. Astrid S – Trust Issues
Astrid S released her Trust Issues EP toady and its the titular track that’s grabbed us. The chorus rolls like a steam train, crafting an ear worm along the way.
10. SiR – Mood (Feat. Zacari)
TDE’s SiR has dropped his second album Chasing Summer and he’s enlisted label mate Zacari for this slow-blazer. Mood sits back in the beat and serves vocals. The whole thing just feels damn good.
9. Liz – BTR 2GTHR
Liz has had a string of strong releases this year but BTR 2GTHR might be the most immediately impressive of them all. The new drop was co-written with Kim Petras and heads straight for the world of euro pop with intergalactic synths and mind-boggling bass.
8. A$AP Rocky – Babushka Boy
A$AP Rocky’s first post-prison drop is as urgent as you’d expect. It’s a mind-bending, dizzying rap cut that features some of his most present verses in a longtime.
7. Montaigne – Losing My Mind
Montaigne’s new album Complex arrived today and it features this gem. Losing My Mind is a bass-driven, modern disco track that captures attention immediately. As per usual, Montaigne’s voice absolutely soars in the chorus.
6. Tove Lo – Jacques (Feat. Jax Jones)
Tove Lo has dropped Jacques, the third song from her forthcoming album Sunshine Kitty. She’s teamed up with British producer Jax Jones on this one and headed straight back to the same sweaty club that we entered on Disco Tits.
5. Pusha T – Coming Home (Feat. Lauryn Hill)
Pusha T got a Lauryn Hill feature. That alone is worth celebrating but the song gives even more cause. It’s one of Pusha’s warmer cuts acting as an ode for those getting out of prison and re-entering the world.
4. BOI – Sick Of Loving You
BOI is another new name on the Australian pop scene and she’s making some rock solid music. Sick Of Loving You is the sort of cut you expect from the pop masters. It’s smart, daring music with a chorus that hits hard enough to ensure its longevity.
3. G Flip – Lover
It’s a daring move dropping a track called Lover in the wake of Taylor Swift’s album but G Flip has the skills to make it standout. Backed by an organ, she serves soulful vocals that climb the ladder to an emotional chorus.
2. Charli XCX – Warm (Feat. Haim)
Charli XCX has dropped another song from Charli, this time recruiting Haim for Warm. While the previous drops from the album have seen Charli offer new pockets of her sound, Warm Pop 2‘s effortless, electro-pop backdrop.
1. Lana Del Rey – Bartender
You could cherrypick any song off Norman Fucking Rockwell! to sit in this list but at the moment this is our highlight. Bartender is a sweeping ballad that extends a popular Del Rey notion of escapism. It’s a beautiful piece of music.
