Most suspected that we’d never see another The Pussycat Dolls single but 12 years after their last album Doll Domination they have returned with React.
When the Nicole Scherzinger-led group announced they were going to tour again, it sounded like it was going to be nostalgic for fans. They then performed on The X Factor and slotted in a snippet of React, surprising everyone.
This isn’t a nostalgic tour for a quick money grab. This is a proper return and React sounds like Pussycat Dolls 2020 rather than an attempt to recapture the magic that earned them success in the early part of the millennium.
React is a sweaty pop song aiming more for Eurodance than hip-hop – an interesting choice given the pop atmosphere right now. That move turns out to be the right one, giving Scherzinger a chance to let loose over a perky, enticing beat.
It’s unlikely to take them back to the top of the charts but it also doesn’t make the girls look irrelevant. This is a genuinely fresh pop song which is not something we expected from the Pussycat Dolls in 2020. And you just know we’re in for one hell of a video.
Best Moment: Those exuberant synths in the verses give the song buoyant energy.
Worst Moment: If anything, the drop feels a little Major Lazer five years ago.
Best Lyric: “You’re turning me cruel ’cause I’m just wantin’ you to react,” is the peak of the song.
Worst Lyric: “So call me masochistic / But sometimes I want to fight,” is forced aggression.
